Old Paris porcelain vase with portrait Benjamin Franklin.

Paris porcelain mantle vases with portraits of American heroes are very rare, indeed. Only seventeen other pairs are known plus a single vase which, presumably, was one of a pair. Of these, one pair was made by Tucker Factories in Philadelphia in imitation of Paris examples. All but four pairs are in important public collections, eight pairs have Washington, two vases have Franklin and only one other set, in the collection of the U.S. State Department, pairs Washington and Franklin. None other seems to be accompanied by important and complete provenance. None of the known “heroes” Paris vases bear a makers mark.
